It lies East of Topeka, and West of the Kansas-Missouri border. As of the last census, the population is estimated to be about 88,000. Of that number, many are college students as the town is home to the world-famous Kansas Jayhawks, who live at the University of Kansas. Also located within the city is the Haskell Indian Nations University,
It is the sixth largest city in the state and the county seat is Douglas County. Located in northeastern Kansas, it is approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Topeka, and 35 mi (56 km) west of the Missouri state border. Lawrence is situated along the banks of the Kansas and Wakarusa Rivers. As of the 2010 census, the city’s population was 87,643.[13] Its is a college town and is the home to the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University. Haskell permits American Natives of all tribes the opportunity to achieve a college education, and is federally regulated.
The city was founded by Amos Adams Lawrence, who brought money and a vision to the at the time, settlement. Amos saw that there were great things possible in the region, and knew that the industries of agriculture and manufacturing were a natural fit for the region. Eventually higher education also became an industry of it’s own.
The city also played an important role in the pre-civil war era and beyond. At the time, Missouri was a slave-state, while Kansas remained on the other other side of the issue. This is where the term “Free State” originated from, and today that same thinking is seen in businesses such as Free State Brewery and Free State Library.
The city has had many famous and colorful figures calling the town home; of these, the best known is probably William S. Burroughs. Burroughs was born in St. Louis, but left the Midwest early in life seeking his fame and fortune, which he found in abundance. He captured this mindset in his poem “The Western Lands”. Burroughs moved there in 1981, where he lived until his passing in 1997 at the age of eighty-three.
